The network core is the central part of the Missouri S&T computer network. It is physically located across two data centers: one Computer Science Building and the other in Parker Hall. The core is a critical part of our network infrastructure - it ties all of our locations together and to the rest of the world. The new core is a major prerequisite for the other portions of the Network Modernization project. It can be thought of as the foundation that will support the other three pillars of the project: Building Upgrades, Network Segmentation, and Comprehensive WiFi Expansion.
Our new design will deploy new high performance campus core/distribution class switches in each data center to serve as the core of the campus network, providing improved resiliency, scalability, and operational consistency. Along with the new core switches, we will also be deploying security appliances and new wireless controllers. This transition is intended to modernize the LAN foundation, support future growth, and align with best practices for enterprise network architecture.
