Network Modernization Strategic Initiative

Missouri S&T is undergoing a major, multi-year network modernization project with phase 1 beginning in spring 2026 in four of our largest academic buildings.

The aging campus network infrastructure, with some equipment more than two decades old, has become increasingly inadequate to meet the mission of the university due to demands for more connectivity and emerging cybersecurity risks. This upgrade is essential to support Missouri S&T’s ambitious North Star goals as well as protecting critical systems and data from external and internal threats.

The current campus network consists of a mix of modern and legacy hardware with traditional network segmentation techniques used to isolate critical systems. However, due to rising threats from malicious actors and demands for heightened security measures, there is a need to adopt innovative technologies and advanced device isolation techniques such as micro-segmentation for better risk mitigation.

Upgrading our network to modern technology is essential for enhancing performance and reliability, particularly in support of our research initiatives and North Star goals. With faster connectivity, students, faculty, and staff can access resources more efficiently, fostering innovation and collaboration.
