Support costs for nonstandard hardware are the responsibility of the customer.

IT extensively tests standard hardware and software to verify smooth integration and operation in our computing environment.

An unpredictable amount of customization and support are required by nonstandard machines to function smoothly in the S&T computing environment.

Nonstandard Hardware Fees

What fees are incurred by nonstandard hardware use?

Hardware purchased outside of IT or against IT advisement will be subject to the charges listed below. Rates subject to change. Call the IT Help Desk for details.

1. Desktop Engineering Fee
Note: Hardware on the IT Standard Systems list are not subject to this charge.

  • One time fee
  • Covers time and labor expended to test hardware
  • Tests equipment compatibility with S&T network
  • Tests compatibility of equipment with existing campus software and hardware 

2. Hourly service charge - up to $50 per hour, depending on the type of labor involved

  • Recurring charge, as needed
  • Applied to cover expense of labor expended
  • Assessed for ongoing maintenance on nonstandard hardware
  • Nonstandard equipment may incur a significant number of maintenance hours over its life cycle
  • Incurred often as software and operating systems are updated and deployed 

IT standard systems do not incur additional support fees through the life of the equipment warranty.
