Outlook at Home

The S&T VPN Client is not required for email access. You only need the S&T VPN Client if you need to access network file shares or Remote Desktop.

Outlook is the preferred email client. (Not to be confused with Outlook Express.) 

Outlook is installed on almost all campus computers, and can be purchased for home use at a discount by all university faculty and staff. The instructions below apply to personal computers which need Outlook installed.

Outlook (Windows) At Home

  1. Install Outlook using the default settings
  2. Restart your computer, if necessary, and connect to the Internet
  3. Launch Outlook from the start menu
  4. Go to Control Panel (If viewing by Category, select “User Accounts and Family Safety”
  5. Double click Mail and click Email Accounts
  6. Select your account with type “Microsoft Exchange” and click Change
  7. Next to Server, type owa.mst.edu
  8. Check the box next to Use Cached Exchange Mode
  9. Next to User Name, type your email address (SSOUserID@umsystem.edu)
  10. Click More Settings
  11. Click on the Connection tab
  12. Check the box to Connect to Microsoft Exchange using HTTP
  13. Click Exchange Proxy Settings
  14. Next to https://, type mail.umsystem.edu Icon indicated a new window/tab will be opened by pressing link
  15. Check the box to Connect using SSL only
  16. Check the box next to On fast networks...
  17. Check the box next to On slow networks...
  18. Click OK
  19. Click OK again
  20. Click Check Name
  21. Enter your email address (SSOUserID@umsystem.edu)
  22. Enter your SSO Password
  23. Click OK
  24. Click Next
  25. Click Finish
  26. Start Outlook

Outlook (Mac) At Home

  1. Install Outlook using the default settings
  2. Open Outlook
  3. Click on the Outlook menu
  4. Click Preferences
  5. Click Accounts
  6. Click Exchange Account
  7. Next to e-mail address, enter your email address (SSOUserID@umsystem.edu)
  8. Next to user name, enter your SSO username (UM-AD\SSO)
  9. Next to password, type your SSO password
  10. Uncheck the box to configure automatically
  11. Next to server, type owa.mst.edu
  12. Click Add Account
  13. Click Advanced

  Note: If you have emails saved locally on your computer, follow the Microsoft instructions Indicates that you will be directed to an external site by clicking on the link. to import the data into Mac Outlook.
