How to Connect to the Campus Network from Home Using S&T Anyconnect VPN Service

The Cisco AnyConnect client is available for Window, MacOS, Linux, Android, and iOS. The following sections are separated by type of device you are using.

Windows

Mac

Linux

iOS/Android/Windows Mobile


Windows:

  1. Go to https://anyconnect.mst.edu. 
  2. Enter MST-USERS\SSO UserId and pssword.
  3. Click 'Continue' to go to the next page.
  4. Click the link for your platform and download the installation file, continue installing the software (default options).
  5. Run the software

Mac:

  1. Go to https://anyconnect.mst.edu
  2. Enter MST-USERS\SSO UserId and password.
  3. Click 'Continue' to go to the next page.
  4. Click the link for your platform and download the installation file, continue installing the software (default options).
  5. Run the software

Linux:

  1. Downloading the packages from anyconnect.mst.edu will give you an installer to run (including a vpnsetup.sh script to run to install it), but the alternative is much cleaner.
  2. Install openconnect (an open-source implementation of anyconnect via your system's package manager the names and requirements of thsi software depend on your distro and network management software.

    sudo apt-get install openconnect

  3. Connect to our Campus VPN server using the command.

    sudo openconnect anyconnect.mst.edu

  4. Answer the prompts. Most users will want the following options:

    GROUP: S&T_Campus_Access
    Username: MST-USERS\joeminer

  5. You should see the following banner and connection information.

    POST https://anyconnect.mst.edu/
    Got CONNECT response: HTTP/1.1 200 OK
    CSTP connected. DPD 30, keepalive 20
    Connect Banner:
    |
    | Missouri S&T Anyconnect VPN Service
    |
    Connected tun0 as 131.151.31.184, using SSL
    Established DTLSconnection *using GnuTLS). Ciphersuite AES128-SHA.

  6. Leave the openconnect terminal windows runing. you must leave this open to maintain a VPN connection.
  7. Open a new terminal window and you are connected.

                Arch: openconnect, networkmanager-openconnect for networkmanager support
                Ubuntu: openconnect, network-manager-openconnect for networkmanager support
                Fedora: openconnect, NetworkManager-openconnect for networkmanager support
                Mint: openconnect, network-manager-openconnect for networkmanager support
                CentOS: openconnect, NetworkManager-openconnect for networkmanager support


iOS/Android/Windows Mobile:

        While the operating systems differ, the installation method is the same. Install 'AnyConnect' by Cisco Systems via the App Store/Play Store/Marketplace.
        Note: Android has two versions, one called 'AnyConnect ICS+' and one called 'AnyConnect for Samsung KNOX'. If you do not use KNOX, install the ICS+ version.


Running the software:

  1. The software runs with default options, no special parameters need to be set or given.
  2. Provide the URL anyconnect.mst.edu, and click connect.
  3. Select group "S&T_Campus_Access" and enter your MST-USERS\UserId and password.
  4. Accept the banner to initiate the connection to the VPN.
  5. At this point, the AnyConnect client will minimize and you will be connected to the VPN.
