3D Scanning

Check out the 3D Scanner

S&T is now offering a desktop 3D scanner for students to check out, use, and return. Students can check out the MakerBot Digitizer Laser 3D Scanner for up to 7 days at a time by contacting the Library Service Desk.

There will be a $10 per day late fee charged to the student account if the scanner has not been returned after the 7 day period. The student will be responsible for picking up and returning the MakerBot Digitizer Laser 3D Scanner to the Library Service Desk in the same condition it was in prior to use. Damage charges may occur if the scanner was abused.

How does the scanner work?

The scanner's laser sweeps the physical object staged on a turntable and rotates over the surface as it records thousands of points. The accompanying software constructs the associated mesh. This method of scanning will capture an object’s basic form. Occasionally, the surface may need to be treated with a matte finish or corn starch powder to reduce the reflectivity of the part so the laser can accurately reflect back to the source. Without treatment, a shiny surface may result is spikes or noise in the resulting data.
